INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS

6 Steps for a Healthy Relationship

Research shows that interpersonal relationships can help you live longer and healthier.  People with healthy and strong relationships tend to fight sickness and diesease better, achieve higher goals and report a better quality of life. Here are 6 Steps for a Healthy Relationship:

• Give Yourself to Others – While you may not have a chance to save someone’s life or repair a defect surgically, the gift of yourself is the greatest gift you can give. Name three ways you could help someone else by giving of your time or talent or money or simply by giving them some encouragement.

• Practice Generosity – Generosity Heals.  There are many ways to live a life of generosity besides giving money. What do you have that you could give to make a difference in someone else’s life?

• Treasure and Protect Your Friendship – Too often people take their friendships for granted and fail to nurture and strengthen them as much as possible. Write down the names of your three best friends and something you could do today to let each one know how important he/she is to you.

Commit to Teamwork at Home and at Work – Ecclesiastes 4: 9–10 says, “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!” What could you do to become more of a team player, at home and at work?

• Keep Your Romance Alive – by loving your spouse creatively and spontaneously. Give him or her a massage and a listening ear. Delight yourself in your spouse, and keep falling in love.

• Love Others Sacrificially – Recall a time when your most constructive direction might have been to adopt an attitude like that exhibited by Don and Tom. What did you say or do? Was that choice easy or difficult to make? What might you say or do differently should a similar situation arise in the future?
